Additionally, a rise in food prices due to these heat waves would heavily impact impoverished communities, as food will become way too expensive to afford. This inaccessibility will lead to even more health issues, like undernutrition.
Chicago city officials mapped out the health impacts of extreme heat, which can disproportionately impact the most vulnerable and disinvested areas. This research helped spark policy change, specifically in housing policy, which required changes in standards to subsidized senior apartments.
