Vulnerable communities have long been impacted by the severe changes that our climate has been facing over many years. Things such as heat waves, temperatures that break previous records, and other climatic changes have been key to causing these communities to be disproportionately and negatively impacted.
Some vulnerable communities consist mainly of elderly people. These people tend to be highly affected by any type of heat stress, even more so than any regular community. Conditions, such as diabetes, asthma, physical disabilities, and more, are more often found within elderly folk.
People who work in manual labor industries and outdoors tend to work in more rural areas. These areas get disproportionate and severe amounts of heat compared to other places.
Some local policies that would help resolve the problems include implementing the construction of green roofs throughout the town, as well as planting more vegetation and trees to help with the reduction of carbon dioxide. Federal policies should focus on lowering or providing aid for utilities, specifically electricity and water.
